Sindo District Hospital is a prior health centre that was recently re-designated as a distric hospital as is adjusting with some growing pains.

It houses a general and maternity ward, single OR, pediatric ward, outpatient department, pharmacy, lab, and FACES HIV clinic.

Most of the staff are well trained professionals posted in Suba for a year or so. It is considered a "hardship" area due to it's rural location.

There are 1-2 medical officers who oversee the hospital, supervised by the medical superintendent,Dr. Kimutai (also pediatric consultant). Below the MO's are several clinical officers who see patients in OPD and the wards.

The hospital often struggles to keep the electricity on and running water comes and goes. There are basic lab tests including hemoglobins and sometimes full hemograms (CBC), blood smears for malaria, sputum smear for TB, urine microscopy, stool microscopy etc. No cultures unfortunately.

Working in the hospital is a great challenge for your clinical skills and creativity. You will have to rely on your history (sometimes translated through several languages) and clinical exam and sometimes try many empiric therapies to help your patients.

While it is frustrating to feel you have limited resources to care for patients, you also can learn a lot about simple interventions that make big differences. It creates a huge opportunity for residents and students to brainstorm ways to help that might include knowledge exchange, select medical technology donations etc.
